A $170 Million Victory and Another Casino-Free Year

This past year we are pleased to report that no casinos were built in Philadelphia. Since our founding on June 1, 2006, we have worked with allies and built coalitions that have protected our city. This last year we have:

  • Earned thousands of television, newspaper, and internet articles about this struggle, including generating coverage in The Washington Post, CNN, NPR, the Wall Street Journal, and international press. Read recent coverage of Casino-Free Philly.
  • Pressured Mayor Nutter to oppose both Delaware Riverfront sites, stopping Foxwoods from building at the site at Delaware and Reed after it had allegedly sunk $170 million into the project.
  • Worked with civic leaders across the city, most recently Asian Americans United and leaders opposed to Foxwoods’ proposed site in the heart of the city. We continue to build opposition to the proposed Sugarhouse casino on Delaware Avenue.
  • Ran Operation Hidden Costs, our first campaign focused on the economic costs of bringing an addiction-based industry into the city of Philadelphia.
  • Offered over a dozen speaking events and trainings to grow our leadership capacity, including media training, speaking at national and local events, and high-profile direct action trainings.
  • Reached out nationally to anti-casino organizations, including speaking at the national StopPredatoryGambling.org conference, signing an agreement for mutual support with Chicago’s anti-casino group, and sharing material and contacts with others around the country.

We did all of this with a budget of under $60,000. As grassroots organizers, we know how to do a lot with a little. We promise a big bang for your buck! Make a contribution today!
