Welcome to the CFP Blog! We've had an eventful casino-free year! Please share your thoughts and reflections by emailing submissions to Lily@CasinoFreePhila.org. Video from Wednesday's actionWe had a great time out there on Wednesday! Take a look at the CBS 3 news story from the event, and join us Thursday at 1:00 PM in Dilworth Plaza on the west side of city hall as we continue to show our support for Mayor Nutter's efforts to right the casino wrong. Don't Ask, Just Tell! You'd think the Governor would have a bit more power than casino owners. But, according to Gov. Rendell, we "shouldn't get too excited" about his efforts to get the casinos to move from the proposed riverfront locations. He says he can't force the casinos to move. But, isn't it the job of government to fix fatally flawed laws? Sorry Ed, we’ve caught on. If you really want to stand up to special interest groups and look out for the public like the governor you are, don't ask the casinos to move, tell them! But I guess the most important message is that we're ready to take action.Submitted by Lily on Fri, 08/15/2008 - 12:19pm.[written by Valerie Keller] I'm a 4+ years resident of Pennsport in South Philly, and before that Bella Vista for over 10 years, so I have a great fondness for South Philadelphia and all the culture and neighborhoods and mix of people around here. Where I live now is about three and a half blocks from the proposed site for Foxwoods Casino. Need I say more? I seem to always be angry about something these daysSubmitted by Lily on Fri, 08/15/2008 - 12:13pm.[written by Andrea Preis] I seem to always be angry about something these days - if it's not the war in Iraq, it's sub-prime lending; if it's not the 76ers, it's the high price of pizza. There's always a new issue in the shadows waiting to jump out and drive me crazy. But few things have pushed my buttons like the issue of the casinos and the sneaky way the legislation was passed. We the People don't want them and especially not in the neighborhoods that were chosen as sites, one of which happens to be MINE! Ed: Don't Ask, Just Tell! Action08/20/2008 - 12:00pm 08/20/2008 - 1:30pm Ed: Don't Ask, Just Tell! Rendell claims he can't force the casinos to move, even though he's the Governor of the State. Is he really saying that casino operators have more power than state government? Somebody should call his bluff, and that somebody is us. Join us for some protesting outside Rendell's Philadelphia office the day before he meets with Foxwoods so that he'll get our message and not be such a wimp! Site Reclamation Training SuccessSaturday’s site reclamation training was not only informative, but fun too! About 30 residents and concerned Philadelphians came out on a gorgeous sunny morning to learn about site reclamation and when and how we may use the tactic. The first few news stories have come out about our training. Here is coverage from PlanPhilly , including a short video and The Inquirer. Look for more articles at the week goes on. Thanks to all of you that attended, and for those of you that couldn’t make it, check out our downloadable training manual!
