Gambling Fact Sheets

Some have opposed casinos based on their poor traffic plans, increased crime and gun violence, or fear of being forced out of their neighborhoods. When the lame-duck state legislature passed a law to allow casinos to give out unlimited free drinks in December it added more concern about increasing addiction to gambling, alcohol, etc.

Still others are fighting for their jobs. Local restaurants, taverns, and entertainment venues (like bowling alleys) who cannot compete with the casino will be put out business. Or the port jobs lost by the poor planning of the casinos.

Further some are worried about becoming dependent on casinos -- an industry that does not have the interests of our city at heart. The reasons continue -- getting revenue on the backs of mostly poor people and more.

Asian American United Statement on Mayor's Signature | Asian American United's powerful statement about the City Council and the Mayor’s actions. Please read it here below.
Asian Americans United is disappointed but not surprised by the Mayor's decision. It has been clear from the start that there has been no intent to engage in an inclusive process that respects the voices of residents and communities. Worse still has been witnessing the dismantling of processes that have been established in our city precisely to protect residents from capricious and self-serving development.
