Casino-Free News: February 2008

Wednesday, February 27th, we launched Operation Hidden Costs. The campaign will reveal the real costs of casino slot parlors in Philadelphia. Take a look at the PlanPhilly Coverage of the campaign launch.

The campaign is a six week campaign with three specific objectives:

1.) Get the Governor to name at least seven hidden costs (we will help him with some examples);

2.) Get the Governor to put a price tag on those casinos and create a cost/benefit analysis from available data (if he will not do it, then we will);

3.) Get the Governor in a public debate on whether casinos are worth it, including his plan for how we will pay for the costs.

Check out the Philadelphia Weekly this week. The article gives faces and voices to some of leaders that have made this movement what it is today. Don't miss the extra features that are only available online, including an audio slide show.

The photographer who took the pictures in the PW, JJ Tiziou, and radio producer Rachel Guberman have developed a project called "Philly CasiNO Voices." Please take a look at their work so far and check back as it continues to grow.

The Penn Treaty Museum created a video that highlights the history behind the proposed SugarHouse casino site. For more information visit the Penn Treaty Museum Website.

Collateral is an independent weekly news show that focuses on stories that get little or no news coverage. It offers perspectives not typically found in the corporate media.

Last week the story was about the proposed casinos. Take a look:
